James Handy, a character actor with a career spanning more than five decades, was fatally stabbed Wednesday morning in the Los Angeles area city of Tarzana, authorities said. He was 76.

Handy's most recent role was as bartender Jimmy in "Top Gun: Maverick." Over his lengthy career, he amassed nearly 150 screen credits across television and film. He was known for portraying an exterminator in the 1995 film "Jumanji," which starred Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst and Jonathan Hyde.

His television appearances included roles in "The West Wing," "9-1-1," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "CSI: NY," "The Young and the Restless," "Castle," "Criminal Minds," "Cold Case," "Without a Trace," "ER," "The X-Files" and "Mulaney."

According to reports, Handy's girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, 76, said her son, Michael Gledhill, allegedly committed the fatal stabbing. Gledhill spoke to media outlets outside her home in Tarzana on Friday, two days after the incident.

"I'm just trying to make it through one day at a time, a minute at a time," Gledhill told The California Post. She said she was in disbelief over the alleged killing and expressed that she "loved James and my son" and "can't believe" Michael allegedly murdered Handy.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what may have sparked the deadly attack on Wednesday morning.
