Amad Diallo scored in the 90th minute to give Côte d'Ivoire a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday at Philadelphia Stadium.
The Manchester United winger struck with a first-time left-footed shot from Wilfried Singo's cross to break the deadlock in stoppage time. Diallo entered the match as a substitute and delivered the decisive moment after both teams had combined to hit the crossbar three times during regulation play.
The victory marked Côte d'Ivoire's first win over South American opposition and halted Ecuador's unbeaten run at 19 matches. It was also Côte d'Ivoire's first World Cup appearance in a dozen years.
The result put the Ivorians level on points with Germany, who defeated Curaçao 7-1 earlier in the group stage. Côte d'Ivoire fielded the youngest squad at this World Cup, with 19-year-old Yan Diomande delivering a notable performance in the match.
Ecuador had looked strong throughout much of the contest before Diallo's late breakthrough secured the three points for Côte d'Ivoire. Singo, operating from his defensive position, found space surging up the right flank to deliver the cross that led to the winning goal.
