Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital from Old Trafford after feeling unwell shortly before Manchester United's Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday.
Ferguson, 84, was in the tunnel area at the stadium ahead of the fixture when he fell ill. Club sources stressed the admission was a precautionary measure and not an emergency situation. According to reports, Ferguson remained conscious and underwent preventive examinations at the hospital.
The former Manchester United manager, who retired in 2013 after 27 years in charge, is a regular attendee at the club's home games and watches matches from the directors' box. He had been pictured at Old Trafford on Sunday a couple of hours before kick-off, including in a photograph with consultant cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, who posted the image on social media.
Ferguson managed Manchester United from 1986 to 2013, winning 13 Premier League titles and the Champions League twice during his tenure. In May 2018, he underwent emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage, which left him seriously ill. He discussed his recovery in detail three years after the incident.
The club indicated internally that it expected Ferguson to return home soon, though no formal statement was issued regarding his condition or the specific nature of his illness.
