Philadelphia Union defeated New York City FC 3-2 at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, extending their remarkable winning streak to four games and maintaining their surge up the Eastern Conference standings.
The victory capped a dramatic turnaround for Philadelphia under interim head coach Ryan Richter. The Union entered the match having won just once throughout the season before claiming three consecutive victories, lifting themselves from the foot of the Eastern Conference table. Sunday's result pushed that streak to four wins since the World Cup break.
NYCFC, meanwhile, had also arrived in strong form, unbeaten in three MLS matches. The home side held the seventh and final automatic playoff first-round berth in the Eastern Conference, a position they were seeking to maintain against a Union team fighting to climb back into contention.
Bruno Damiani proved decisive for Philadelphia, scoring twice including the go-ahead goal that secured the victory. Danley Jean Jacques added a third for the Union. NYCFC's Bénie Traoré and Luighi Hanri Sousa Santos each found the net, but the two goals proved insufficient.
Richter deployed a 4-2-2-2 formation with André Blake in goal. The back line consisted of Kai Wagner, Neil Pierre, Nathan Harriel and Frankie Westfield, while Danley Jean Jacques and Jovan Lukić anchored the midfield. Cavan Sullivan and Indiana Vassilev provided attacking support from wide positions, with Milan Iloski and Bruno Damiani leading the Union's attack.
The fixture had been anticipated as a closely contested affair. Six of the teams' last seven meetings had been decided by a single goal, with four of those encounters settled by a one-goal margin where only one team scored. Sunday's three-goal thriller fit that pattern of competitive encounters between the conference rivals.
The result kept Philadelphia's momentum intact as both teams entered the stretch run of the season with their playoff aspirations still in play.
