A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck southern Italy early Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded the quake at magnitude 6.1.

The epicenter was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Calabria, approximately 38 kilometers from the city of Cosenza and 17 kilometers southwest of Scarcelli. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake occurred at a depth of 247 kilometers, while the German research center measured the depth at 253 kilometers.

The tremor was felt across a wide area of southern Italy. Residents reported feeling the earthquake in Catanzaro, Cosenza, Naples, and other localities in the Vesuvius region, according to local media reports.

Domenico Costarella, director of the operations room for Civil Protection in Calabria, said that emergency personnel had contacted all mayors in municipalities closest to the epicenter, including Cetraro, Lamezia Terme, and Amantea.

Despite the earthquake's significant magnitude, no casualties or material damage have been reported. Civil protection and emergency teams have conducted preventive inspections in various localities to verify any potential effects from the tremor.
