Trump and Mamdani to attend Knicks NBA Finals game separately Monday

President Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plan separate attendance at Game 3, with Trump in a suite and Mamdani in a different section.

President Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plan to separately attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday, with each expected to occupy seating that aligns with his preferred public image.

There are no known plans for the two to meet at the venue, and a chance encounter appears unlikely. "I will be in a very different section," Mamdani said Thursday during an unrelated news conference.

Trump, who has long promoted his wealth and maintains a history with Madison Square Garden as both audience member and performer, is expected to watch from a suite, according to a person familiar with the plans. Mamdani, a democratic socialist who seeks to present himself as connected to ordinary people, will sit elsewhere in the arena.

New York City officials are simultaneously preparing for a potential scheduling conflict should the NBA Finals series extend to Game 6. The Knicks are facing the San Antonio Spurs in the series. If Game 6 occurs on June 16, it would tip off at 8:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden, which sits above Penn Station. On the same day, a World Cup group stage match between France and Senegal is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., with thousands of attendees expected to use Penn Station to travel to MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands.

Mayor Mamdani stated that city officials are hoping for a four-game sweep by the Knicks to avoid the scheduling overlap. "I want to make very clear that we are hoping for a sweep," Mamdani said. "We are preparing for anything, because that is our job as New York City government, to ensure that any eventuality is one that we are ready for."
