A large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine killed five rescuers in Kharkiv and left at least 35 people wounded in Kyiv on Monday, with strikes igniting fires across residential areas and at one of the country's most significant religious landmarks.
The five rescuers in Kharkiv were killed by a second Russian strike as they fought a blaze caused by an earlier attack, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. At least five other emergency workers were wounded in the city.
In Kyiv, the death toll rose to five by mid-morning, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Among the 35 injured were two children and a pregnant woman. Emergency rescue services continued operations across the capital to address the consequences of the attack.
A series of powerful explosions echoed across Kyiv as a wave of ballistic missiles was followed by Shahed drones. Many residents sought shelter underground as officials urged people to take cover. "Kyiv is under the main strike. There is significant destruction of civilian infrastructure," Klymenko said.
The Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a thousand-year-old monastery, caught fire following the strikes. Firefighting operations continued at the religious site as well as at the Mystetskyi Arsenal. Emergency services reported fires and damage across all districts of Kyiv, with strikes hitting residential buildings, infrastructure facilities, and enterprises.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russia launched a combined strike using attack unmanned aerial vehicles and air- and ground-based missiles of various types. A total of 681 air attack weapons were recorded—70 missiles and 611 UAVs. Ukrainian air defenses shot down or suppressed some 632 targets, including 50 missiles and 582 UAVs. Hits from 20 ballistic missiles and 27 attack UAVs were recorded at 42 locations, with debris from shot-down UAVs falling at 12 additional locations.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched over 60 missiles at the capital alone. In total, 70 missiles and 611 drones were fired across Ukraine during the night attack.
One branch of the Rozetka online marketplace in Kyiv was destroyed during the attack, according to co-founder Iryna Chechotkina. No employees were injured at the facility.
