Major League Baseball issued a warning to three San Francisco Giants pitchers after they wrote Bible verses on their Pride Night caps during Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker wrote Bible verses on their caps. Roupp wrote "Gen 9:12-16" on his cap. A third pitcher, Sam Hentges, chose not to wear the cap at all.
MLB said in a statement that the warning was issued for violation of league uniform rules. "To be clear, this routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message," the league said. "We respect players' right to free expression. However, writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League" rules.
The league emphasized that the warning concerned the act of writing on equipment rather than the specific religious content. MLB stated the warning would not be tolerated in future games.
