The New York Mets scored 10 runs in the 12th inning Monday night to defeat the Washington Nationals in an extended contest at Nationals Park.
The Mets struck first, with Luis Torrens driving in a run with a double in the second inning to give New York an early 1-0 lead. The Nationals responded immediately in their half of the second. José Tena hit an RBI double to tie the game, and Drew Millas followed with an RBI single to put Washington ahead 2-1.
The Nationals extended their advantage in the third inning when Joey Wiemer drove in a run with a double, making it 3-1. The Mets, however, mounted a comeback that carried into extra innings. After the game remained tied through regulation, New York erupted offensively in the 12th inning, scoring 10 runs to secure the victory.
The Nationals had entered the series following a weekend against the Baltimore Orioles in which they won two of three games. Washington made several lineup adjustments for the Mets series, inserting Jorbit Vivas at second base in place of Nasim Nunez and having Drew Millas catch instead of Keibert Ruiz. Jake Irvin took the mound for the Nationals, while Christian Scott pitched for the Mets.
The two teams were meeting for the second time this season, with the Nationals having won two of three games in their first matchup. The Mets entered the series playing improved baseball compared to earlier in the season.
