A shooting at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, left one person dead and four others injured Saturday evening, authorities said.
Police responded to the area around Midland Avenue shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday. Five people were shot in the incident, according to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers. The victims included a 4-year-old child and a 14-year-old, along with three adults. Two of the adult victims sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Another victim died at a hospital following the shooting.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active. Police have not released additional details about the circumstances of the shooting or identified a suspect.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton issued a statement Sunday expressing her prayers for the victims and their families. Gorton pledged that the city would use its ONE Lexington initiative to organize a trauma-support event for people affected by the shooting. "Our community is coming together to pray for those who were wounded yesterday," Gorton said. City officials indicated they are mobilizing community resources to provide support to those impacted by the incident.
