Jürgen Klopp has revealed details of Liverpool's unsuccessful attempt to sign Kylian Mbappé when the French striker was playing for AS Monaco, before Mbappé eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Speaking as a pundit for German broadcaster MagentaTV during France's World Cup quarter-final match against Morocco, Klopp described the failed recruitment effort as the "most expensive non-transfer" Liverpool had invested in during his tenure as manager.

According to Klopp, Liverpool organized a private meeting with Mbappé and his entire family aboard a private jet. The club arranged a flight from Blackpool to Nice, France, where the Mbappé family boarded the aircraft, which Klopp described as having "five rooms or something." The club also provided food during the encounter.

Klopp characterized the approach as an all-out effort to attract the then-Monaco forward. "We really went all out," the German manager said. He added that the negotiation involved flying in circles, indicating the complexity and duration of the recruitment process.

Mbappé, now 27 and playing for Real Madrid, was regularly linked with a move to Liverpool during Klopp's time at the club. The striker is represented by his mother, who runs a consulting company for professional footballers.

Ultimately, Mbappé chose to join Paris Saint-Germain instead of accepting Liverpool's proposal. Klopp's revelation came during the broadcast of France's quarter-final fixture, which France won to advance to the World Cup semi-finals.
