Robert Lewandowski has signed with Chicago Fire on a two-year contract as a Franchise Player through the 2027-28 season, the Major League Soccer club announced Sunday.

The 37-year-old Poland striker departed Barcelona at the end of the season when his contract expired after four years in La Liga. During his time with the Spanish club, Lewandowski won three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and three Supercopa de España titles.

Lewandowski had attracted interest from AC Milan and the Saudi Pro League before choosing to join Chicago Fire. He is expected to become one of the highest earners in MLS.

Gregg Berhalter, director of football and head coach of Chicago Fire, commented on the signing. "His arrival reinforces our ambition to compete for trophies and elevates the standards of the club to levels worthy of this city," Berhalter said. "We can hardly wait to begin working with him and to show firsthand to Chicago why he is among the most revered sports icons in the world."

Lewandowski's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to Chicago, which has one of the largest Polish communities outside Poland. The striker is Poland's all-time leading scorer with over 700 goals across his career.

Chicago Fire currently sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference after making their first playoff appearance last season. The club's only championship came in 1998 during their inaugural MLS season. They return to action after the World Cup break on Friday, July 17, when they face Vancouver.

The Polish striker will compete in MLS alongside other recent high-profile arrivals. Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, the current MLS champions, remain among the league's top contenders. French forward Antoine Griezmann has also joined Orlando City, and South Korean midfielder Song Heung-Min plays for Los Angeles FC.

Chicago Fire's roster includes Belgian forward Hugo Cuypers and Ivorian midfielder Djé D'Avilla. Lewandowski will turn 38 in August.
