Afghanistan's Taliban authorities said Pakistani mortars and missiles struck a university and residential neighbourhoods in the eastern province of Kunar on Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 80.

Taliban deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said the strikes hit the city of Asadabad, the provincial capital, as well as surrounding districts. The attack targeted the university as well as civilian residential areas in the region.

The reported strikes come amid ongoing cross-border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The two countries had agreed to a temporary ceasefire during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, but reports of cross-border attacks have continued to emerge, putting the truce under strain.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have held talks in China in recent months aimed at ending months of conflict between the two nations. Afghanistan's Taliban authorities previously characterized those peace talks as useful, though the underlying disputes remain unresolved.

The reported casualties and damage from Monday's strikes represent a significant escalation in the immediate aftermath of the agreed pause in hostilities. The attack on civilian infrastructure, including an educational institution, has drawn condemnation from Taliban officials.
