John Chell, the former NYPD chief of department, announced over the weekend that he is considering a run for New York City mayor in 2029 as an independent candidate.

Chell, a Staten Island resident who previously lived in South Brooklyn, posted on multiple social media platforms sharing his intention to explore the mayoral race. "I'm officially telling New Yorkers and friends beyond that I will look into the possibility of running for the NYC mayoral race in 2029," his LinkedIn post stated. He added, "Time to get back in the game — Reengage like Maverick circa 1986…Take our city back to when life was easier and things made sense."

On Monday, Chell posted a video further explaining his interest in running under the independent label. "I don't subscribe to old school ways of doing things, because the old school ways of doing things have got us in this boat. I'm a registered Independent. I'm purple. I have ideas on both sides," he said in the video. He also stated, "Nothing to lose and everything to gain here."

Chell served as the NYPD's highest-ranking uniformed officer when he was appointed by Commissioner Jessica Tisch in December. His announcement comes as the city prepares for the 2029 mayoral election cycle.
