New York City's first full casino with live table games opened to fanfare on Tuesday. Resorts World, a slots parlor in Queens, officially cut the ribbon on an expanded gambling area featuring more than 200 games with live dealers, including blackjack, craps, baccarat and roulette, as well as more than 2,500 slot machines.
The facility, operated by Malaysia-based Genting Group, has been operating as a video casino for more than a decade next to the Aqueduct Racetrack near John F. Kennedy International Airport. The expansion marks the first time live table games have operated in New York City.
Lim Kok Thay, CEO of Genting Group, threw ceremonial dice during the opening ceremony. Robert DeSalvio, president of Genting Americas East, said the company plans to bring more tables and slot machines online later in the year.
The company has announced a planned $5.5 billion expansion of the 72-acre site. According to officials, the expansion will include a new hotel, restaurants, a 7,000-seat entertainment venue and more than 12 acres of new public green space. The project required final approval from the New York State Gaming Commission before the live table games could begin operations.
Resorts World had previously announced plans to hire around 1,000 employees for the expanded gaming operations.
