A tanker truck overturned Wednesday morning on Rockaway Boulevard in Rosedale, Queens, spilling approximately 2,000 gallons of fuel into the roadway, storm drains, and a nearby canal.
The accident occurred just after 11 a.m. The 18-wheeler had a capacity of 12,400 gallons but was carrying 8,500 gallons at the time of the incident, according to officials. Crews responded to contain and clean up the spill.
Firefighters sprayed foam to cover the leaked fuel. The leak was stopped, and another truck offloaded the remaining gasoline from the overturned vehicle. Officials said fuel entered the canal, which leads to other channels in the area.
The truck driver and two other individuals were checked out on the scene. No further details on their condition were provided.
Emergency response was substantial. One hundred firefighters from 17 volunteer fire departments in Nassau County responded alongside the Fire Department of New York. Nassau County police will investigate the circumstances of the overturn.
