Ukrainian missile attack on Belgorod kills six civilians

Ukraine and Russia conducted extensive strike operations across multiple regions overnight and into August 17, resulting in civilian casualties on both sides and damage to military infrastructure.

Russian air defense systems claimed to have destroyed 205 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The drones targeted multiple regions including Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Volgograd, Kaluga, Kursk and Rostov, as well as Crimea and waters of the Azov and Black Seas. Two people were killed in these attacks—one in Bryansk Region and another in Astrakhan Region—though the Defense Ministry provided no additional details on the extent of damage or specific populated areas struck.

In a separate operation, Ukrainian armed forces launched a missile attack on the village of Koloskovo in Russia's Belgorod Region on Monday, killing six civilians and injuring four others, according to acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev. The village, located in the Valuysky district approximately 15 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, sustained significant damage when the strike destroyed a building that caught fire and damaged a vehicle. Among the injured were a 14-year-old child and three others, two of whom declined hospitalization after receiving medical assistance.

Ukrainian drone operations also targeted military facilities in occupied Crimea. A fire broke out at the Yevpatoria Aircraft Repair Plant on the evening of August 16 after drone debris fell at the facility, according to the Telegram channel Crimean Wind. The incident began around 19:30 when a drone was shot down approximately above the middle of the runway. Debris from the downed aircraft ignited, and around 20:00, three additional drones arrived and targeted the western end of the runway where antennas and transmitters are located. The facility, which repairs military aircraft, has been repeatedly targeted in past operations.
