Mayor Zohran Mamdani has fired New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda and appointed Edwin Raymond, a former NYPD lieutenant, to the position Thursday.

Raymond spent 15 years with the NYPD before retiring in 2023. He authored a book about his experience in the department and wrote a 2016 article for New York Times Magazine titled "A Black Police Officer's Fight Against the N.Y.P.D." He also ran an unsuccessful bid for City Council in 2020 while still on the force, marking a first in New York City history.

"Edwin Raymond represents the kind of public servant New Yorkers deserve: principled, courageous and deeply committed to justice," Mayor Mamdani said in a statement.

Raymond responded to his appointment in a statement: "I'm grateful to now be part of Mayor Mamdani's administration as the city's new sheriff."

Miranda was appointed sheriff in 2022. During his tenure, he was probed by the Department of Investigation regarding his enforcement of unlicensed smoke shops and cash seized during those operations. Mayor Mamdani did not provide a specific reason for Miranda's removal. Attempts to reach Miranda for comment were unsuccessful.
