At least 14 schoolchildren were killed when the roof of a private tuition centre collapsed in the Kahna suburb of Lahore, Pakistan's eastern city, on Tuesday, according to officials and rescue workers.

The incident occurred while children were attending classes at the centre. Farooq Ahmed, a spokesman for the emergency service Rescue 1122, told the BBC that the service received a call about the collapse at 16:45 local time. He said the rescue operation was completed within one hour.

Most of those recovered from the scene were between seven and 11 years old, according to Ahmed. Medical sources said the children killed in the collapse were aged between around four and 12, according to the AFP news agency.

Eight other children were injured and were being treated at a hospital, senior police official Faisal Kamran said. A teacher was also among those injured. Faisal Kamran added that rescuers were searching through the rubble after receiving reports that more children could be trapped beneath the debris.

The owner of the tutoring centre and another person were taken into custody as part of an initial investigation into the collapse, authorities said. According to reports, the owner of the centre and the constructor were detained on suspicion of negligence.

Rescue workers inspected the damaged tutoring centre, which was reported to be under construction at the time of the collapse. Local people and rescue ambulances were present at the scene as authorities launched their investigation into the incident.
