Gotham FC defeated Washington Spirit 1-0 Wednesday night at Citi Field in Queens before 42,175 spectators, marking the team's first home match in the borough and drawing the second-largest crowd ever for a women's professional sporting event in New York City.

Rose Lavelle scored the match's only goal, executing what was described as a perfect chip over Washington goalkeeper Sandy MacIver. The goal came at a moment when Gotham had begun to consolidate control after an initial period of pressure from Washington.

The match featured competitive play throughout, with opportunities for both sides. Gotham's Jordynn Dudley was forced to leave the field at the 34-minute mark following a concussion protocol evaluation and a subsequent foul, with Jess Carter replacing her on the right flank.

Ann-Katrin Berger, Gotham's goalkeeper, made several crucial saves to preserve the result. Her most significant stop came in the 90+4th minute, when she denied a shot aimed at the upper right corner, deflecting the ball to a corner kick.

The attendance of 42,175 represented the second-highest crowd for an NWSL match, behind only the Denver Summit versus Washington Spirit match in March 2026, which drew 63,004 spectators. The crowd also set a record for women's professional sports attendance in New York City, surpassing the 28,143 spectators who attended the 2023 U.S. Open tennis final at the same venue in Queens.

Wednesday's match served as a preview of Gotham's planned relocation to Queens. The team announced it will move from its current base in Harrison, New Jersey, to the Etihad Park in Queens, scheduled to open in the first half of 2027. The new stadium will be located adjacent to Citi Field, where Wednesday's match took place.

The match was contested under challenging weather conditions. Temperatures in New York City reached near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and air quality alerts were in effect across the region due to smoke from Canadian wildfires spreading across the northeastern United States.
